PILGRIM: Volcanoes
12/20/2009
We're in the land of volcanoesWe mistakenly used the term extinct when describing the volcano we're currently anchored beneathIt's actually just inactive, like most of the volcanic isles down hereWe got a lesson in that fact last night.
Anchored off Nevis, we're about 30 miles NW of the island of MontserratMontserrat is not so inactiveIt blew it's top back in 1997, burying the town in 30' of ash and still spews ash todayWell, the wind is usually out of the E down here so the ash drifts harmlessly down wind and lands somewhere on the sea.
The wind has shifted to the S so we woke to ash all over the boatIt's everywhereThe haze in the air looks like a light Maine fogSo, we're outa here todayHoping to get up to St Barths where we'd like to be for Christmas..
