iPhone 4 SmallSome people are having trouble with the newly launched iPhone 4 dropping calls. This issue is not AT&T's fault, but a problem with the design of the phone. When people hold the phone by gripping the lower left corner it blocks the iPhone 4 antenna. Apple issued a statement telling people to hold the phone differently or buy a case.
Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
Engadget has a copy of an email from Steve Jobs to an new iPhone 4 owner experiencing the problem. Steve Jobs tells him to just avoid holding the phone that way.

Most tech blogs and publications are arguing that Apple's design is flawed. Users should not have to adapt to the phone. The phone should be built for ease of use to begin with. Fast Company writes, "This is an error in design, and forcing customers to buy aftermarket accessories is an unfair solution."
